A Journey to Distance Education of Chinese Medicine

A Journey to Distance Education of Chinese Medicine

by: Xiao Ying Peng

Since Chinese government starts to develop “The Belt and Road strategic Project”, the Traditional Chinese Medicine (Short for TCM) has been chosen as a major field to develop throughout the whole Europe and the world because TCM has been accepted gradually by many patients who come from different countries. Shulan College of Chinese Medicine has signed an Agreement of Co-operation for the Distance Diagnosis and Eduction of Chinese Medicine with Chinese Medicine Hospital of Jiangshu Province in December 2017.

As one project of this co-operation, Shulan College of Chinese Medicine and Chinese Medicine Hospital of JiangShu Province held a remote teaching lesson at their main offices of both sides. It was such a lovely sunny day on 22nd May 2018. Luckily I have been chosen as a representative of graduates of Shulan College to join this fabulous lesson and learnt a lot from all famous Professors who are from both sides. There are three Professors who were involved in this teaching lesson. One was Professor Fang, head and director of hospital, one was Professor Zhou, a well-known gynecologist and another one was professor ShuLan Tang, president of ShuLan College in UK.

In the beginning of the lesson, I was a bit nervous, with the interview going and all professors’amiable and benevolent smile made me gradually feel much relaxed. I have asked all the professors a common question that all our graduates want to know which was: In western countries, all the patients should sign an document of Informed Consent for being invited to join in our academic study. Should it be needed in China for the graduates? By the way, doing Chinese medicine in Western country is completely different from doing it in China. In China Chinese medicine and conventional medicine are combined together in hospitals and there are sufficient medical facilities for patients to be tested and for doctors to diagnosis. But it is so hard to get the Diagnostic index and results of Western Medicine in western countries for Chinese medicine doctor. What suggestion and solution can you provide? Then Professor Fang answered: The Informed Consent document should be signed for all the patients who are involved in the study in China. For the Diagnostic index and results of western medicine should be done as much as possible. If it is difficult for Chinese medicine doctors in western countries, it is feasible to have some subjective result scores.

Professor Zhou is a disciple of National medical Master Professor Xia Guicheng. Second question I asked Professor Zhou was a gynecologic problem. I said to her:

How can you do in Chinese Medicine for treating Infertility, Polycystic Ovary and Endometriosis during period, post period, ovulation and pre-period? Then Professor Zhou gave a complete and perfect answer and I have learnt a lot from it. She said with her gentle voice: “I can use the method of menstrual cycle regulation from our famous National medical Master Xia to answer the question of graduate Peng xiaoying. Master Xia has divide menstrual cycle into 4 stages which are following: Post-Period, Ovualtion, Pre-Period and Menstruation. During Post-period, the Bao Gong(Uterus) is empty, Yin Blood and Kidney Yin are deficient, Yin is growing. Ovulation is Yin reaching peak value and heavy Yin transferring to Yang and leading to ovulate mature egg. Pre-period is Yang growing which includes Yang Qi, Liver Yang and Kidney Yang.At the same time, Yin is also heavy, Both Yin and Yang are exuberant. Period is Yang reaching the peak value and heavy Yang transferring into Yin which leads to period bleeding. Actually menstrual cycle is the process of the waxing and waning movement and transformation of Yin Yang, profit and loss of Qi and Blood. So according to this theory and method, the causes of infertility, PCOS and Endometriosis are mainly Kidney Yang deficiency with blood Stasis, plus some turbid phlegm. So the main treatments are Boosting, warming Kidney Yang, dissolving blood stasis and reducing turbid phlegm.”

At last, I have asked another question about using acupuncture treating infertility on behalf of a bachelor student who suffered high fever and was absent. The question was : Are there any Syndromes causing infertility which may be treated successfully(resulting in pregnancy) using only acupuncture without herbal medicine? Then an acupuncture expert Dr.Fu answered this question deeply and clearly. She said: “Some of infertility, PCOS and Endometriosis are caused by adjustment disorder of Hypothalamus, Pituitary gland and Estrogen. Acupuncture has the function of regulating the adjustment of Hypothalamus, Pituitary gland and female hormone. But there is no case that only acupuncture can work on its own without herbal medicine because many patients who suffered from infertility, PCOS and Endometriosis have organic lesion which acupuncture can’t do much function on.” Then Dr.Fu also told us what other diseases or disorders can be treated by acupuncture, particularly in Neurology disease, such as painful problem, neuralgia and brain problems.

After finishing this interview, All professors from both sides think the online remote education is good way to build up a bridge between the teachers and students no matter how far the distance and no matter any language barriers. This provides a platform and an open window for all the graduates and all the learners who are interested in Chinese Medicine. I feel this was a wonderful and fantastic lesson I ever had in my career life. I highly appreciate Shulan College of Chinese Medicine providing me this good opportunity to improve my knowledge in Chinese Medicine and strengthen my ability in my practical skills clinically.

I would try to be a Communication Envoy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. And I wish TCM can spread to every corner of all the world and every patient from everywhere can beneficiate from our TCM which is our Chinese Culture Pearl. I wish every success of Shulan College in the near future!
