Chronic back pain is a debilitating condition to live with. It can affect every aspect of your day-to-day life such as lifting children, doing housework and even getting dressed. Chronic back pain is a year-round problem, but the cold, winter months can make it even worse. Fortunately Tuina massage & Acupuncture can help alleviate some of the symptoms.

Common Causes of Winter Back Pain

Bad posture is one of the main causes of chronic back pain. However, in the winter we tend to hunch, slouch and shiver more than usual. These actions cause the muscles in the back to tighten, resulting in increased tension and pain.

Sciatica is another back condition that worsens over the winter period. During the colder months, nerve roots in the lower back compress, causing shooting pains that extend into the buttocks and the hamstrings.

Be aware of your posture and correct it by sitting up straight to release the tension in your back. Avoid slumping in front of the computer or hunching your shoulders when you walk.

Use gentle stretching exercises to improve muscle flexibility. Wear warm clothes and use warm compresses to relieve pain.

Tuina Massage

Tuina is an ancient form of Asian therapeutic massage that we practice here at Shulan College. Hand techniques such as kneading, gliding and friction are applied in the same way as Western massages.

Tuina massage is known to be particularly effective in the relief of chronic back pain. It helps to release muscle tension and improve flexibility. However, it doesn’t just focus on the physical manipulation of the muscles, but on the overall physical and mental balance by increasing the energy flow throughout the entire body.

By restoring and maintaining a healthy energy balance, Tuina massage can help to prevent further injuries from occurring.
